Lenin died of natural causes. In 1924, he was diagnosed with a chronic, painful sickness that was likely to have been caused by tuberculosis, the disease that had afflicted him for most of his adult life. He had been largely confined to his bed since 1922. In December of that year, he wrote to fellow Bolshevik Mikhail Gorbachev: “I am slowly but seriously ill. I seem to be growing weaker and weaker. This weakling’s life is coming to an end.�
