How to get iron in Minecraft 1.17?

Naturally, there are plenty of ways to get iron that don’t involve smelting. You can find iron ore in places like mines, or the ground around deep lakes. But the most efficient way to get iron is to smelt it from its ore. To do this, you’ll need to find a furnace, which can be either an item or a structure. The furnace must be powered by redstone.

To get iron, you can use a furnace. This is the only way to get an iron pickaxe without smelting iron ore first. To make a furnace, you will need redstone, a stick of charcoal and a bunch of coal (or wood). You will also need a crafting table if you don’t want to craft one in the menu. Once you have all the ingredients, put the stick of charcoal on top of the coal and the redstone on top of that.

If you want to get more iron, consider searching for a map that has a large lake or ocean nearby. Most biomes have a river that flows into it, so you can easily collect nearby water in a bucket. If you do this regularly, you'll slowly build up a large amount of iron in that area.

Your first chance to get some iron is from the furnace in your village. Once you have the furnace, you can refine the iron ore you find into iron ingots. Refining iron produces 8 iron nuggets and removes half of the ore’s weight as lava. If you do not have a furnace, you can smelt the iron ore in your furnace in your village.
