How to recognize a rip tide in the sand?

One of the first things you may notice is a sandbar at the mouth of a bay or river. This is where the water flows out, and if you look down at the sand, you may notice a distinct line separating the wet sand from the dry sand. What to look for in a rip tide?

A rip tide is a strong current that flows inland from the shore. At the shoreline, water flows out to the ocean. When the current becomes exceptionally strong, it can sometimes pull back water from the ocean and create a reverse flow. This is a rip tide. If you notice a large wave crashing into itself in an empty ocean, it’s likely due to a strong rip current.

How to know if you are in a rip tide area?

If you are on the water, you can look for visible ripples on the water. You can use a boat or a kayak to easily check for the presence of ripples, or you can look for small breakers on the shoreline. If you notice that you are in an area where the water is lapping, you may be in a rip tide.
