It depends on how long you stored them. If you’re buying apples at your local farmers’ market or grocery store, they’re already picked and most likely refrigerated. At home, you can either refrigerate apples or leave them at room temperature. However, we recommend refrigerating apples, especially if they’re not quite ripe yet.

This can cause the apple to begin to turn soft and develop an unpleasant taste, a process called “cidering.” To slow down the reaction, apples should be stored at 40 degrees Fahrenheit in a dark, dry place.
